Clarification on unit specs. - Magellan Maestro 5310

Review Date: July 2, 2008
Reviewer: Daphne Santiago, Manassas, VA
Just to clarify: I own this unit and while it's exactly what I was looking for (needing neither Bluetooth nor Voice Command) I can clarify the inaccurate information stated above - the 5310 has neither of these features. The Magellan Maestro 4050 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator has both features available for those who are interested. It is possible that we'll see Voice Command came out as an upgrade for the 5310 as it did for the 4050, but it's not there now. That said, this is a great little unit with a large, easy-to-read screen, great AAA extras, good maps and a very intuitive user interface. I'd highly recommend it and at $350 Amazon has one of the best prices I've seen (it's $500 elsewhere).
5310 Customer Service is Crap on a Cracker

Sirs,
I recently purchased a 5310 GPS on 10/30/2008 at Costco for my HVAC business and I was shocked to learn the 5310 GPS unit with a production date of 10/01/2008 has a map that is from 2006/2007 and the update due in the first quarter of 2009 will cost $[...] more, and would not be provided for me at no cost, I learned this after speaking to your resolution specialists.

This is my second unit I also own a 4040, I did buy the upgrade for this unit 6 months ago.

Any reasonable person would expect to receive the latest software with a new unit, the Garmen units we own are provided with the most current software at NOCHARGE, so when I return this unit even though I like it because of its intuitive capability you have no one to blame but your poor customer service and unrealistic company policies.

So in closing I repeat the 5310 and their Customer Service is Crap on a Cracker

I liked it so far!

I got my Magellan Maestro 5310 today and tested it thoroughly. This is my first GPS Navigator and I liked it a lot. It works with no problems.

Pros: It talks a lot: the actions you take, the street names, warning for approaching turns, etc. and bells/chimes at the turning points... Route recalculation takes about 3 seconds. Big screen is awesome. Satellite connection is perfect in Texas. The accuracy is about 4-5 meters. And it is full of POI.

Cons: So far the only con can be the difficulty to connect the cradle with the swivel mount. It's not easy to push the cradle all the way down until it locks in place with the swivel mount. Don't force it, it will break, or don't mount the Magellan Maestro 5310 before having those two pieces lock perfectly. What I did was to put some soap on the tabs and the holes and then the cradle slides and locks without forcing it.
Magellan is THE Maestro!!

This is my second Maestro!! I bought a 3.5" a couple years ago and its performed super!! The only reason I bought this new one was because of the bigger 5" screen! I passed my first one down to my daughter (Lord knows she needs guidence!! LOL). The Magellan are very easy to use and very intutive. My first GPS was a Garmin and its a bit more complicated.

The one option that I purchased with this new one was the weighted dash mounting pad. In MN its against the law to mount it to the windshield so it mounts to the pad and sits firmly on the dash. The bonus is that you can remove it from the dash and hide it out of sight and there is no tell-tale suctioncup mark telling everyone that theres a GPS inside. Thats a real security plus in my book.

I called tech support once for help and they were very friendly and helpful.

The only negative is that it comes with a CD as an instruction manual. To obtain a print version you have to print it out on your home printer. I would like a print instruction manual to refer to instead of putting the CD in my computer. I would even be willing to purchase it as an option.

BOTTOM LINE: Get the Magellan for ease of navagation! Very quick to learn and use. Enjoy the journey. Enjoy EVERY journey!

This is a beautiful new toy! I love my Magellan Maestro. I have had several GPS's ... usually settling for value over quality. This time I went with what I knew I wanted...larger screen, brighter picture (the others you could not see the screen during the daytime - this one is very clear and bright!), voice directions that give the names of the road, if I miss a road - being told to make a u-turn (another GPS sent me through a lot of side streets), a trip planner (I am realtor - trip planner is perfect for setting up a showing route) and options on what type of directions...less use of freeways, most use of freeways, avoid toll roads...etc. It also has a list of things that can be shown on your route - gas stations, restaurants (broken down by type even!) shopping malls & more. I love that it has the AAA feature - if you get into trouble, your AAA account info is right on the screen along with the number to call and the specific coordinates of where you are. For a small monthly fee you will also be tapped into the local traffic and can avoid traffic or construction jams. What it doesn't have is the ability to change the voice from male to female or an easy way to resume the trip once you stop...it goes to sleep and you have to start the trip over, then choose the next address. But for all it has right, I am thrilled that I made this purchase. Definitely spend the money and buy this one - it is fantastic!
Exactly what I needed!

I am a novice with GPS systems yet have family members who use them more regularly.

I bought this product specifically for road trip vacations. The 5-inch screen made it unnecessary for me to wear my reading glasses to see it. The menu interface is fairly user-friendly and the voice over adjustable volume can be set loud to hear even with music playing at high levels.

During my recent trip to Orlando, the only issue I ran into was being routed through the gated off employee parking lot for Animal Kingdom theme park and the guard routed us to the main entrance which he told us happens alot with GPS systems in general. Also, the Magellan unit is so slim & compact, it fit snugly in my backpack.

I reviewed 9 different prospective units before deciding on purchasing this one and I am thoroughly satisfied with that decision.
Buyer Beware - Good GPS Though

I purchased this unit after evaluating several different vendors and models. It was exactly what I wanted however - PLEASE NOTE THE UNIT DOES NOT HAVE BLUETOOTH NOR VOICE COMMANDS. Amazon has yet to change the descriptions as someone else noted this months ago. The unit works well and I have done the free OS upgrade . Just be aware that Amazons prices fluctuate on this unit - I paid $380 and two days later it was $349 now it's $352 so check often as they do not do price adjustments.

I bought this device to replace my old, PDA-based, gps system. Works as expected. No major-major issues discovered as of yet. Sometimes, however, it takes up to 2-3 minutes to find the satellites. Registering with AAA got an additional year of warranty.
Love my Magellan

My first gps was a 5310, Not doing my home work I found myself looking at the gps units at Best Buy, not a very big selection when you look at all the ones available online. I wasnt intrested at the time in bluetooth, voice command, mp3, msn ect. just wanted a good gps and decent size screen, and I selected the 5310 for $499. Really should have more features for that price.

Thats what this unit was 5" LCD screen with great POI, traffic and easy to use. Used it right out of the box for seveal stops on the way home and played around with it that day. Really nice unit. Plugged it in that night to charge and the next morning it kept turning off, didnt take a charge, touch screen stoped working, I turned it off and on with no results. I looked thru the manual, which wasnt very good and should have told me at least it has a reset button. It didnt. So I took it back to the store and got a refund.

Thats when I started reading reviews online, realized maybe the reset button MAY have fixed the problem and I would still have it today and loved it. I also found all the other gps units available the store didnt have so I researched for a couple of days and for the price options ect I really liked the 4250, its the same unit as the 5310 plus bluetooth and voice command for about half the price, It does have the 4.3 WQVGA screen instead of the 5" LCD, but its just as good and easier to carry.

See my review of the 4250 but to sum it up I really love it works great. Hasnt frozen or needed to be reset. Found I use the bluetooth and voice command on occasion and like I said half the price for the same unit.

I Did stay away from Tom Tom on recommendations from the store to friends to family and many reviews, bad maps routing you down dead end streets ect. Never really heard anything bad about Garmin just more money with less features. Magellan and Garmin use the same maps, Tom Tom's are different.

I have downloaded the new firmware 4.6 for my 4250 and would recommend that. It does help the bluetooth and overall operation runs smoother.
OUTDATED MAPS

Reviewer: David Lenorman,
The packing on the Magellan Maestro should have a warning and all store that sell it should warn that the maps that come with the 5310 are old, outdated and do not include Alaska. I just bought this for my father in-law and the first thing he did was try to get a route from my house (in Anchorage, AK) to his. And why should I pay for a 79.00 DVD if Magellan won't even tell me if any Alaska streets on on it. GO figure...

If you live in Alaska - go NOT buy Magellan products as they will rip you off and you won't get a useable product.
