Frustration taking a toll on Agra youth

Agra, July 3 (Calcutta Tube) Family disputes, frequent transfers, poor health… these seem to be enough reason for youth to take their lives in the Taj city.

Four people in Agra committed suicide Friday – out of extreme despair and frustration, according to police officials investigating the deaths.

Twenty-five-year-old Lalit Baghael of Radha Nagar in Kamla Nagar area threw himself before a running train to end his life.

A suicide note recovered from him said he was committing suicide as he was tired of his ill health and ‘nobody should be held responsible for this act’.

Family members informed the police that Lalit, who worked as an electrician in a shoe company, had fractured his leg in an accident. He was operated upon but there was no improvement.

In the Kidwai Park area, hotel manager Vivek Srivastav, 25, committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan as he was being transferred frequently. He had returned here a week ago on being transferred from Delhi to Mumbai.

The police is investigating the case but Vivek’s wife Mukti, working for ICICI bank in Agra, said he was feeling harassed and frustrated at being transferred again and again.

In another case, a father of three kids, consumed poison to end his life.

Ganesh worked at a book stall at Agra Cantt railway station, police said. Family disputes and tensions with his wife were said to have forced him to end his life.

Later in the day, a teenaged girl in Etmaduddaula area ended her life. Family members, without informing the police, cremated her body in a hurry, leading to suspicion. The case is now being investigated.

The number of suicides have gone up in Agra in the last few months. And experts say the youth are succumbing to frustration and despair, owing to several reasons.

Social activist Netra Pal Singh, counsellor for the All India Women’s Conference, said: ‘The young generation is not able to cope up with stress and takes extreme steps when confronted with stark reality or a situation not of one’s liking.’
