Four lakh vehicles added on Delhi roads

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) As many as 6,352,939 vehicles plied on Delhi roads during 2009-10 — a good four lakh jump from the previous year, a report said Wednesday.

According to the Delhi Statistical Hand Book-2010 prepared by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, as many as 6,352,939 vehicles, including 2,013,680 jeeps and cars, were registered in the financial year 2009-10.

There were 5,931,080 vehicles registered with the transport department in the year 2008-09, the report said.

The report was released by Delhi’s Finance and Planning Minister A.K. Walia on the occasion of world statistics day Wednesday.

According to the report, a total of 1,859,370 four-wheelers were registered in 2008-09.

There were 4,044,229 two-wheelers plying on the city roads in 2009-10 compared to 3,797,943 a year ago.

The report says that there were 86,482 auto-rickshaws plying on the roads in 2009-10 compared to 83,948 a year ago. Also, the number of taxis rose from 40,072 in 2008-09 to 45,242 the very next year.

However, the number of rickshaws registered with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi remained constant in the two years at 89,429.

The Delhi Statistical Hand Book-2010 is an annual publication covering 23 chapters on population-related data and its projections, estimates on state domestic product, per capita income and poverty, vital statistics relating to birth and death rates. It also contains data on education, health, transport and communication infrastructure in Delhi.
