Five Nepalis among six killed in landslide

Shimla, Feb 14 (IANS) Five Nepali labourers and an Indian girl were killed when boulders fell on their hutments in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh Sunday, police said. Two people are still missing.

The dead included a 17-year-old girl who worked in an eatery. The incident took place at Kaksthal near Wangtoo, Superintendent of Police Yashbir Singh Pathania told IANS.

He said around 45 people, mostly labourers employed by a contractor of Jaypee Karcham Hydropower Ltd, lived in the hutments on the banks of the Satluj river when the disaster occurred.

‘Twenty people managed to run to safety when the boulders started rolling down from the hills,’ he said. He said five of the dead were from Nepal.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sanjay Sharma said 11 people had been discharged after treatment while four have been admitted to a hospital at Rampur.

The Jaypee group is setting up 1,000 MW hydroelectric project near the accident site, some 180 km from Shimla. Officials from Jaypee group could not be contacted.

The government has announced Rs.10,000 compensation to the kin of the dead and Rs.5,000 to the injured.
