Debashree Roy (Bengali: Debosri Rae) is one of the most famous actresses from Bengali Cinema in the late 80′s and 90′s. She was the top heroine for more than a decade. She has acted in more than 100 films and has bagged over 40 prestigious awards, including a National Film Award for Best Actress for the film Unishe April in 1995. She is also the aunt of popular Bollyowood actress Rani Mukerji.

Debashree Roy was born in Kolkata on August 8th. Her Nickname is Chumki. She is the daughter of Birendra Kishore Roy and Arati Roy. She was a student of APG School (Park English School) but she could not continue her studies for long because of her passion for dancing and acting. Her debut film was “Balak Gadadhar” directed by Harimoy Sen in 1969 when she was a mere child. But as a female lead she first appeared in the film “Nadi Theke Sagare” directed by Arabinda Mukhopdhay.
Debashree Roy started her dancing career as a stage performer in early years. She took her dancing lessons from her mother, her elder sister Purnima Roy, Bandana Sen and Kelucharan Mahapatra. She had her own dance group “Nataraj”.
She first acted as a heroine in the film ‘Nadi Theke Sagare’ released in 1978. Since then Debasree has acted in many films in lead roles. In 1981, she acted in the Aparna Sen’s first film ‘36 Chowrangee Lane‘ which was well acclaimed. In 1996, she won the national award for best actress for her role in Rituparno Ghosh’s film ‘Unishe April‘.
She has acted not only in Hindi Films but also in television serials also. Her major film were “Dadar Kirti” by Tarun Majumdar, “36 Chowringee Lane” by Aparna Sen, “Unishe April” by Rituporno Ghosh. She won the National Award for the Best Actress in the year 1996 for “Unishe April”. She married actor Prasenjit in the year 1994. But they were separated in a very short time. Earlier her romance with cricketer Sandip Patil was talked about. That relationship also ended within a very short period of time.
