Kolkata, Nov 12 (IANS) East Bengal will face arch rivals Mohun Bagan in the final of the Platinum Jubilee Cup tournament Sunday.
Mohun Bagan humbled FIFA International Order of Merit holder Sheffield United 1-0 while East Bengal edged past Mohammedan Sporting Club with an identical scoreline in the semi-finals of the the tournament at the Yuvabharati Krirangan here Friday.
The first match between Mohun Bagan and Sheffield United was heading for a draw as both team failed to score in the stipulated 90 mins.
The visiting team were the more aggressive side and but missed their best chance by scoring through a penalty in the second half. And in the end it cost them the match.
Ashim Biswas, the lone scorer of the game, sent the ball into the Sheffield net in injury time with seconds left for the umpire’s final whistle.
Mohun Bagan braved a strong defence with their goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee, who was declared the Man of the Match, setting an example for the team.
In the second semi-final, East Bengal sneaked past hosts Mohammedan Sporting with a goal in injury time.
Former Indian cricket captain Saurav Ganguly sported the Mohammedan jersey for the first time against East Bengal and nearly scored for his team in the 24th minute of the first half.
Mohammedan Sporting kept on attacking the East Bengal citadel but failed to score.
Sanju Pradhan lead East Bengal to victory by scoring in the dying minutes of the match through a penalty kick.
