Kolkata, Oct 26 (IBNS): Ahead of their departure for New Delhi to play in the Durand Cup, East Bengal received a boost on Tuesday as business house Vibgyor Group entered into a partnership with the soccer giants to provide healthcare facilities among other necessities for their game.
“The primary objective for this association will be to set up international standard facilities and infrastructure and to provide a coaching staff of international level,” group chairman Raja Bhadra said here in the presence of East Bengal secretary Kalyan Majumdar.
East Bengal coach Trevor James Morgan said the club is well prepared to take up challenges in the Durand Cup after having won the Federation Cup this season.
Under him East Bengal recorded sixteen wins in all appearances (11 in Calcutta Football League and 5 in the Federation Cup).
“We are capable of winning the Durand Cup but at the same time we are not taking any side lightly. We will take one match at a time and move accordingly,” the 62-year-old lanky coach said at a felicitation organised by their new sponsors the Vibgyor Group.
Sixteen time-winners East Bengal won first the Durand in 1951 and last in 2004 and are expected to take on Air India on October 30 and Salgaocar on November 2.
Captain Soumik Dey echoed the coach and said, “If we win the first two games we are definitely going to bring back the trophy home this time.”
With the withdrawal of I-League champions Dempo Sports Club and the absence of Mohun Bagan, the task for East Bengal in the Durand is a bit easier this time.
However, holders Churchill Brothers, who tasted defeat against East Bengal in the Federation Cup, are sure to fight for the championship.
On Tuesday, the Vibgyor Group also felicitated 12 medal winners from Bengal at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games 2010, presenting company made laptops and other citations.
The recipients were Dola Banerjee, Rahul Banerjee, Poulami Ghatak, Mouma Das, Subhojit Saha, Soumayadip Roy, Prasant Karmakar, Sukhen Dey, Rahatulla Molla, Leander Paes and Bharati Chettri.
Poulami, Mouma, Subhojit and Soumyadip, all Table Tennis players, were present at the function.
