East Bengal maintain top position in I-League

Kolkata, January 1, 2010 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS) East Bengal maintained their dominance in the I-League with 6-1 win over Air India at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here on Wednesday to retain top slot in the 14-team competition.

Tolgay Ozbey grabbed a brace for Red and Golds, while Robin Singh, Soumik Dey, Ravinder Singh and Mehtab Hussain scored one each to put the side with 18 points from six games. This was the biggest win for city giants in I-L as they routed debutant AIFF XI 4-0 in 3rd round.

Leading 3-0 at lemon break, East Bengal escalated their prime form in the second half and pumped in another three goals to collect full points with ease. Man of the Match Tolgay completed his brace in the 49th minute.

Airmen after trailing by four goals and with their defence in sixes and sevens throughout the match, pulled one back in the 55th minute through Erick. Robin Singh was shown the exit gate picking up his second yellow card in the 80th minute as East Bengal were reduced to ten men.

The Delhi lad was shown the first yellow card in the 73rd minute and will miss the next encounter against Mumbai FC.

Mehtab Hussain took the advantage of hapless Air India defence and marked East Bengal’s fifth goal through a 35 yard scorcher in the first minute of the injury time, while minute later Ravinder Singh put the final nail in Air India’s coffin. East Bengal with a perfect record so far have 18 points, while Air India have just managed to garner three points from six matches.

In Ludhiana JCT broke their hoodoo to pocket full points against Viva Kerala edging past by a solitary goal played at the Guru Nanak Stadium.

Maninder Singh struck the winner in the 49th minute after both the teams failed to break the deadlock in the first forty-five minutes.

With their first win this season, JCT now have four points from six match, while Viva are yet register a win and have managed four points from as many matches.

In Margaon, Goa, Pune FC defeated Salgaocar SC 1-0 by goal from Selwyn Fernandes in then 32nd minute.
