Two friends, Farhan ( R. Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi) set out in search of their third buddy Rancho (Aamir Khan). As they travel the valleys, another story sets in, the journey through their past life- their college days. Rancho, Farhan and Raju are room mates, studying in the most prestigious engineering college of India, headed by it's dean Viru Sahastrabudhhe aka Virus (Boman Irani). Rancho comes in with new ideas that oppose the education system and ultimately oppose all the teachers and Virus too. The irrepressible free-thinker Rancho, in his unique way, touched and changed their lives. Virus tries his level best to separate the three friends and prove Rancho's ideas to be wrong. Parallel to all this, is the developing love between Rancho and Pia (Kareena Kapoor) who is Virus's daughter. With a tale of incidents, respect and love for Rancho increases as Virus too, realises what a gem he is! However, at the graduation ceremony, Rancho disappears and is never seen again. Back in the present time, Farhan and Raju on their journey to find Rancho, unveil some hidden facts that make them curious to know who and where Rancho actually is! Three Idiots is a comedy of ideas that is as provocative as it is funny, as wildly entertaining as it is insightful. A laugh-riot that talks about the most important of human pursuits: self-actualization.

| I've never seen a Bollywood movie before, but this came highly recommended. I must admit, I was blown away by this film. It was the first time in my life I ever wanted to walk out of the theater, buy another ticket, and walk back in. I choked up at the sad parts, laughed until my sides literally ached at the funny parts, and fell in love with the female lead. I realized that some of the humour was "flying over my head," judging by the women in Saris who were laughing very loud at parts that were just mildly amusing to me, but I have since been telling all my friends that they must see this. I'm buying a copy the moment it's available. |
It's like they scanned my brain and then made a movie just for me!

| I love this film. It's sweet, quirky, funny, and has fabulous over-the-top dance numbers and a smattering of rude bathroom humor. 3 Idiots is basically a Bollywood buddy movie, and the relationship between the three title characters is truly wonderful. I also bought the soundtrack, which is for me as an American listener the most listenable Bollywood music I have yet encountered. Also, all of the lead actors are super cute, which is an extra bonus. |
wonderful movie - great music, great story

| I saw this movie - all three hours of it - in the theater. I just loved it. It had drama, comedy, music, dance. What more could you ask? I am looking forward to owning it and the soundtrack too because the music is terrific. All is well! |

| Despite all the cheesy humor that is intended to be loved by everyone who's going to study engineering in India for the next twenty years, I thought 3 idiots was a very entertaining worthy film. Kareena looks unfashionable, ugly and retarded (but I still love her) and Aamir is not at his best, Madhavan was surprisingly tolerable and funny while Boman Irani stole the whole show with his performance of Virus. A must see even if you're Jewish and live in Israel and have nothing to do with us Indians. |
Yeah for Khan... and Madhavan... and Joshi!!!!

| I am a huge fan of Aamir. He never disappoints, and this is not an exception. And this time, not only him, but everyone does a great job, like Sharman, Madhavan, Irani, Kapoor...etc. This movie has an amazing story, great screenplay, and superb role-play of characters. 5/5 |
My new all time favorite movie...

| There are very few movies that I would rush back to the theater to see again and again, this is one of them! I would consider this to be one of the best films I have ever seen. I laughed, I cried, I laughed until I cried. I enjoy Bollywood movies in general, but I would recommend everyone, and I mean everyone (I'm caucasian American-so no excuses about not knowing the language) see this movie. |

I JUST TURNED 51 . i HAVE BEEN WATCHING hINDI ( bOLLYWOOD) MOVIES FOR OVER 50 YEARS.yes, I was a baby in arms, when my mother, then 18, newly married, new in Bombay ( now renamed Mumbai), went to the newly released early 60s hits, with my dad. Rumor has it that I never cried, and enjoyed the movies with a smile, every time.
I now live in Washington DC and have access to many many forms of entertainment. But, still so far, Nothing gives me more pleasure than a new well made Hindi Movie!!
Getting to the point, 3 IDIOTS IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER........
DO NOT MISS IT. FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND HINDI ( & DO NOT WANT TO LEARN IT), THE ENGLISH SUBTITLES RISE TO A NEW HIGHER LEVEL............ |
If you're not a Bollywood fan, rent first [possible spoilers]

3 Idiots is a landmark movie, and a very successful one, going by most reviews and word-of-mouth.
Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks to 3 Idiots, which would make it less than a masterpiece to some people who do watch movies from outside of Bollywood. It's LOUD. It's not- idiot proof - there are way too many bloopers. Just for example, without putting in too many spoilers:
- I wish actors would hold the right chords when playing the guitar even in Bollywood movies.
- You can't drive a scooter without a helmet in Delhi.
- Engineering students don't study in class from a "Mechanical Engineering Dictionary"
- the directors of IITs don't perform the roles shown in the movie
- I saw the twist right in the end a mile away
- The script depends a bit on email forwards which I first got, like, ages ago.
- There's a case of identity fraud which is not believable
- It's a bit rare for an international flight to return after taking off, without any consequences...
Maybe I'm missing the whole point. If we buy the argument - very common among us Indians - that this is a "film for the masses" and that makes it OK to be a bit idiotic, I would still like to have seen the characters less "binary", the story tighter and the movie shorter by an hour. There's a huge list of "partners" and at times the plugs looked crass to me.
I give this 3 stars - 1 for getting one big laugh out of me (the speech sequence), 1 for Amir Khan's amazing ability to act a student at his age and 1 more for some messages which are very relevant.
With movies like this, Bollywood continues its rich tradition of making its own brand of great cinema. I'll remain a Bollywood fan, but I do wish a movie like this could be made superb for all audiences. It definitely had the budget, it was just the thinking which was missing.

Not an idiotic film

After two landmark movies in the history of Indian cinemas, Munnabhai M.B.B.S and Lage raho Munnabhai certainly a lot can be expected out of Raj Kumar Hirani. Making a film out of a blockbuster book Five Point Someone is no mean task because rarely have books translated well to films
How does all bode in 3 Idiots? The movie is exceptionally funny and well made. Hirani proves that he is a master craftsman and his craftsmanship is evident in this movie.
Two friends Sharman Joshi and Madhavan embark on a quest to search for a long lost friend Rancho, who has changed their lives. This journey is a flashback to the days they were in engineering school with a twist at the end.
The sequences in the campus are the funniest ones, especially Omi's speech when he changes the word chamatkaar to balaatkar, guaranteed to bring the house down and possibly the best sequence in the movie. Sharman's mother making roti's is another funny scene. Finally the scene when Madahavan explaining his point of view to his father played by Pariksheet Sahani, all are outstanding scenes.
After the interval the pace slackens a bit but nevertheless are not a drag, just a tad too filmy for my taste. The music is not exceptional but blends well with the proceedings. Ladakh has been captured beautifully and the landscape is so inviting.
3 idiots succeeds because of the acting. Aamir Khan is efficient as usual. Kareena is wasted. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi lend their support competently. The movie in my opinion belongs to Viru Sahastrabuddhe, the lispy professor played by Boman Irani and Chatur the Silencer played by debutant Omi, outstanding performances by these two. These two alone make the ticket price worth it. So it is a good movie and I recommend it strongly. I gave it three and half stars12/25/09 |
