Kolkata, Sep 6 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS): With the festive season round the corner, Kolkata women can find some exquisite collection of traditional handloom saris at ‘Puja’ exhibition and sale organized by ‘Kamala’, the retail outlet of Crafts Council of India (CCI), a voluntary organisation working in the craft sector.

“Traditional outfits have always been an integral part of West Bengal. I see people wearing saris in West Bengal more than anywhere else,” said Padmini Narayanan (wife of West Bengal governor M.K. Narayanan), who inaugurated the event here on Saturday.

Saris make women look graceful,” she added.

[ReviewAZON asin=”B002R2279Q” display=”inlinepost”]The exhibition showcased a wide collection of traditional saris, including ‘Gadwals’, ‘Chanderis’, ‘Khadi’, ‘Bagru’, ‘Shibori’( Japanese form of tie and dye) saris and stoles, ‘Bhagalpuri’ tussars and matka, Assamese vegetable dyed weaves and a range of household linen.

“A major USP of this exhibition is the Shantipuri and Dhaniakhali sari collection. The pattern and colours of these saris exactly imitate the antique 100-year-old saris in the Indian museum,” said CCI presidentKasturi Gupta Menon.

Apart from traditional saris of Bengal, one will also be able to find saris from South India like ‘Chattinads’ and ‘Telias’.

Besides, popular ‘Maheshwaris’ from Madhya Pradesh will also be available in the exhibition.

“In the world of machines, handmade saris are indeed special,” said Paromita Banerjee, a customer, who has already bought three saris at the exhibition.

“It is different from other exhibitions, as saris have been hand-picked,” said Chitra Saha, another customer, who has a knack for traditional saris.

“The saris are exceptionally good. Some of them are so rare that you will not get any where else,” she added.

The exhibition began from Saturday and will continue till September 11.a
