Kolkata, Oct 10 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS): The Consulate of Ireland in Kolkata was officially inaugurated on Tuesday night. M.K Jalan was appointed the Consulate General of Ireland by Irish Ambassador Kenneth Thompson.
Ireland’s diplomatic mission has been in existence in Delhi for quite some time. Irish links has been strong in Kolkata since early times through the Loreto Convent nuns and through various medium of education. Now Ireland made its presence officially in Kolkata by appointing a Consulate General.
Speaking on the occasion, Thompson said: “M.K Jalan is an exemplary businessman and I am sure he can build the bridge between Ireland and West Bengal. At present we are supplementing through non-governmental organization (NGO) fronts by means of liberty business.
“But Ireland has one of the highest rate of new start up companies in the world, as more than 80 per cent of all the manufacturing output in Ireland are sold in international markets. And we want to share the secret of our success with you.”
The Ambassador further said: “We are not into heavy industrial products. Ireland is a leading location for information communication technology (ICT). It is also a leading creator of softwares, for mobile to video games.”
” And I must tell you, we are a land of pharmaceutical and agro- based industries and our dairy products are best in the world. Recently Bengal has made its mark in the IT sector. and i believe, together we can progress further by sharing our experience and lending considerable support to the growing economy of the state and the country,” said Thompsom.
Commenting on his newly-appointed post, Jalan said: “I am honoured to be appointed as the Consulate General by the Irish government. The post bestowed to me is very important and I will give my full effort to shape up the image.”
“I have also planned a work calender and will follow it accordingly to get a fruitful outcome. Apart from this, tomorrow we are meeting the IT minister to discuss on issues how to grow more infra- structure on IT with the joint ventures of both the Countries,” he said.
