Kolkata/Gurgaon, Dec 4, 2010 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS) Chirag United began their I-League campaign with a 2-1 win over new outfit AIFF XI in the opener at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here on Friday.
Striker Elijah Junior’s brace put Chirag United on top, while Lalrindika Ralte booted home a lone goal for the Desmond Bulpin-coached side.
It was a good start for the recent Durand Cup champions as former Sporting Clube de Goa frontliner Elijah Junior found the target off Joshimar Da Silva Martins’s pass in the 3rd minute. The AIFF youngsters leveled the terms in the 21st minute through Lalrindika. His volley from the 30 yards was too good for the opponent custodian.
The combination of Junior and Joshimar once again did the trick for the Subrata Bhattacharya coached side as Junior netted the winner at the stroke of half time to double Chirag’s lead. Joshimar essayed a pass to Junior, who made no mistake to notch up the winning goal.
The score stayed 2-1 in favour of the hosts as they accumulated three important points from their first tie. Junior was later adjudged ‘’Man of the Match’’ for his inspiring performance.
East Bengal will take on their opener against Mumbai ONGC, also a new promotee in the 14-team I-L.
