Kolkata, Mar 26 (IBNS): Over a hundred aspiring singers auditioned for entertainment channel Sony’s popular singing reality show Indian Idol 6 in Kolkata on Monday.
Judges for the sixth season are music director Anu Malik, singer Sunidhi Chauhan and composer-singer Salim Merchant.
Speaking about Kolkata, Malik said, “I grew up loving Bengal. I listened to a lot of Rabingrasangeet and Nazrulgeeti and also songs of Kishore Kumar, Hemanta Mukherjee, Salil Chowdhury when I was young. Being myself a melody composer, I connect Bengal with melody.”
Talking about the Kolkata auditions, he said, “This year we have raised the bar and we are searching that ‘one’ voice and till now we have already got some amazing singers.
“The girls are better this time and has a possibility to win. Moreover the good thing is that they have gone back to their roots and singing more classical and Lataji’s (Lata Mangeshkar) songs in the auditions.”
Malik’s upcoming project is Hindi film ‘Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai’.
On being asked about her experience while judging the show, Chauhan said, “This is a big platform for everyone, where people get noticed easily and you have to show your singing talent and prove yourself. Here I came not only as a judge, but it is like learning something from them and giving something to them.”
She said Lata Mangeshkar is her inspiration and in future she want to sing ghazals, a genre she hasn’t tried yet.
She also revealed that she is getting married very soon.
Merchant praised Kolkata’s singing talents and talked about his upcoming projects that include Heroine, Chakravyuha and Rabba Mein Kya Karu.
The show will be hosted by Mini Mathur and Hussain Kuwajerwala.
Apart from Kolkata, auditions will also take place in Delhi, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Aurangabad and Mumbai.
