Bollywood News: IFFI brings world together: Tavernier

Panaji,Nov 24 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS) Veteran French filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier on Thursday said he is privileged to get Lifetime Achievement Award in a country of rich cinema tradition.

“Films can be a great means to understand the various cultures of the world. Film Festivals like IFFI bring the people of the world together,” said Tavernier at a press conference at the Media Centre, IFFI here on Thursday.

He thanked the jury members for bestowing him the rare honour of Lifetime Achievement Award, and said he felt privileged to receive an honour in a country that has so rich a cinematic culture.

He said that Indian television should also regularly show films from around the world and create awareness for the beauty of world cinema among the Indian audiences.

Tavernier received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Minister of Information and Broadcasting Smt. Ambika Soni at the inauguration the festival on Wednesday.

Tavernier is best known for his films ‘Prix Louis Delluc’ and the ‘Silver Bear’ as well as Special Jury Prize award winner of his film ‘The Clockmaker’ at the 24th Berlin International Film Festival.

Tavernier has to his credit acclaimed films like ‘Life and Nothing But’ which won the BEFTA for best film in a language other than English in 1990 and ‘The Princess of Montpensier’ which competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

Mike Pandey, Member Steering Committee, IFFI 2011, said that the presence of Tavernier will open the door for a greater international exposure of the festival and will help ensure better participation of film makers from around the world.
