Kolkata, Jan 19 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS) Reigning champions Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) and hosts Bengal are set to clash for titles both in men’s and women’s finals at the 72nd senior national and inter-state table tennis championship, being held at Netaji Indoor Stadium here, on Thursday.
In the first men’s semifinal matches on Wednesday, PSPB expectedly whitewashed Tamil Nadu 3-0 after Soumydeep Roy leading the bandedged past in five setter after trailing the first game against Nitin Thiruvengadam 10-12,11-7,,11-6,9-11,11-6 and then India’s No 1 Achanta Sharath Kamal crushed R Abishek in straight set 11-3, 11-6,11-2 to show his class.
PSPB’s A Amal Raj had also easy outing against Tamil Nadu’s R S Raja 11-9,9-11,11-4,11-5 to clince the issue and giving much needed rest to Kamal and Roy from playing the reverse as the two will five time to conserve energy for finlas against Bengal.
In other men’s group’s semifinals, Bengal caused an upset to defeat last year’s runners up Maharashtra A in 3-2 results despite Sanil Shetty’s heroic effort winning both the games handsomely.
Shetty gave Maharashtra 1-0 after taming Sourav Saha 11-5,11-7,11-7, but Bengal’s Anirban Nandy levelled with 11-5,11-8,11-6 win over Aniket Koparkar and then the hosts made 2-1 with Souvik Kar’s five-setter win- 11-9,11-13,8-11,11-7,11-9 against Aman Balgu.
But in the final game Sourav Saha made Bengal separate from Maharashtra despite trailing the first game and finally rallied to win thiller 7-11,11-9,11-8,13-11 against Aniket Koparkar.
In the women’s team championship PSPB led by Madhurika Patkar knocked down North Bengal 3-1 to move in the final to play against
Bengal, who beat also Maharashtra A 3-2 in the semifinal.
Bengal’s move to both the finals happened after a gap of 17 years since 1994.
