Srijit Mukherjee’s ‘Baishe Srabon’ has already got 12 nominations in 11 categories at the International Bengali Film Awards 2012 to be held at Pattaya, Bangkok: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Prosenjit Chathas terjee), Best Supporting Actor (Gautam Ghosh), Best Screenplay, Best Cinematographer, Best Editor, Best Critic’s Choice Performance (Parambrata Chattopadhyay), Best Male Playback (Anupam Roy, Rupam Islam), Best Music Director and Best Lyricist.
The film is a great addition to the archives of Bengali thrillers. A serial killer is at loose in Kolkata committing murders and leaving quotations from by celebrated Bengali authors besides the corpse. When the young cop (Parambrata) makes no substantial progress in the case, the department seeks helps from an ex-policeman (Prosenjit) as a consultant, who was permanently suspended on grounds of insanity. But he is an expert – his special paper being ‘serial killing’. The case takes a new turn with a new suspect (Gautam Ghosh) streaming in. The young cop’s girl friend (Raima Sen) goes to interview this suspect – a struggling poet, once convicted of being responsible for a fire accident in the Kolkata book fair, who would go to any extent to bring revolution with poetry.
Things go really queer with this unusual case and even after it is officially closed, shocking facts gets revealed. The film offers a lot – human nature and incentives, story of struggle, success, and failure, criminal minds and last but not the least – tribute to all those ‘unsung poets’.
All the actors are at their best. And special kudos to Gautam Ghosh- who is brilliant as the complex, passionate poet!
Just watch out – too much profanity!

Sandip Ray’s directorial venture ‘Royal Bengal Rahasya’ is one of the most intriguing cases that Feluda ever solved. Feluda mysteries are a never ending fever for the Bengali audience of eight to eighty. Feluda (Sabyasachi), Jatayu (Bibhu)and Topshe (Saheb Bhattacharya) go to North Bengal as guests of the SinghRoy family, that has the rave reputation for hunting tigers for generations. The present household head Mohitosh SinghaRoy gives Feluda a puzzle to solve which hints towards a hidden treasure, but the smart detective’s vacation turns into a crime detection case when Mohitosh’s secretary (Bhaswar) is found dead. Though the body is partly eaten by a man eater, he was attacked with something very sharp in the chest. Who killed the secretary? And what was he doing in the forest at the middle of the night? What is that Mohitosh’s retarded elder brother Debotosh (Paran Bandopadhyay) tries to tell Feluda that his brother wants to hide? Is that just demented ideas? As Feluda solves the case, that even baffles the local police we enjoy the three musketeers’ adventures in the Terai, their encounter with a giant cat, and discovering bitter truths about the royal family and stupifying facts on the murder mystery.
The scenes capturing the hills wonderful and the tree ‘Fokla Fakir’ are esp. pretty. Lalmohan babu lying on the a stuffed tiger with a red cap worn asken, and a sword in his hand is quite amusing. However, it could have been a bit more emphacized. Among the cast, Paran Bandopadhyay deserves special applause. The trio is good as far as acting is concerned; though it is a known fact to all that Sabyasachi will refrain from doing any more Feludas movies. Yes, he looks a bit old for his role, though it doesn’t stop this wonderful actor from doing justice to his rol as far as acting is concerned. And the demise of Bidhu is a loss. Since Ray said it may be a while before we see any more of Feluda films, let’s enjoy what this film has to offer.
Also available now is the film ‘Bedroom’ is an urban story exploring relationships of a three couples – their struggle, lonliness, commitment and adultery. As they all try to move on with life, tackling personal and professional issues, soothing or using each other, the omnipresent bedroom remains as the silent witness and even serves an appropriate backdrop. Among the strong cast and crew Abir Chatterjee, Rahul deserve special credits. Biswanath Bose in a small cameo is wonderful. And Tanushree as the call girl in smudged eye make up is wonderful. She aptly depicts the loneliness of the character. Though she possess 40 pairs of shoes, she longs for a special red pairthat she will buy when she finds her prince charming- almost a fantasy! A very special scene when we see a pair of red show adorning the feet hanging up in there.
