Apollo Gleneagles, Kolkata gets Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, the first in East India

Preetha Reddy MD-Apollo HospitalKolkata, Feb 21 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS): Patients in eastern India can now have bone marrow transplanted in Kolkata itself as the region’s first comprehensive Bone Marrow Transplant Unit was launched at Apollo Gleneagles Hospital on Monday.

The unit was launched in the city by Preetha Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospital Group.

“Our hospital is known for introducing new technologies and the team of cancer specialists are relentlessly offering their expertise and service to help our patients who need world class cancer care,” Reddy said.

The six bedded Bone Marrow Transplant Unit will have pre and post BMT counseling and support services and HLA typing laboratory and flow cytometry stem cell counting.

It will also have facilities like Unrelated Cord Blood Transplantation for suitable candidates in collaboration with Public Cord Blood Bank of STEMCYTE, USA.

“It is treatment you have out of compulsion; if you want to live you have to do it. This is one of the popular forms and surely gives a better life out of the worst life,” Suparno Chakrabarti, renowned bone marrow transplant specialist who also leads the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit in Apollo Gleneagles Hospital , said.

He also informed that any patient  between the age group of 2 and 65 can undergo this treatment.
