Amway launches campaign to stress on healthy food colours

Kolkata, Mar 10 (IBNS): Colour is an integral part of any food and to make people aware about this necessity of choosing the proper blend of colours in regular diet, direct selling consumer firm Amway has launched their new campaign recently.

VIBGYOR – the Nutrilite Colour Your Diet Campaign” aims at making people aware of the benefits of healthy eating habit and encouraging people to consume their daily dose of colour through fruits and vegetables and adequate supplementation rich in phytonutrients.

Prof & HOD – Dept of Food & Nurtrition, Maharani Kashiswari College, Calcutta University, who was present at the launch here recently, emphasised on the health benefit of spectrum of seasonal colours in fruits and vegetables that are attributed to phytonutrients.

“Pigments that impart plants their colours are called phytonutrients which provide a broad antioxidant protection and have a variety of beneficial effects on health. Whether it is the deep red in cherries, bright orange in an apricot or the deep green of spinach, the color of certain fruits and vegetables is often connected to the health benefit of the food,” she said.

“Phytonutrients are the natural nutrients found in plants, such as lycopene from tomatoes, resveratrol from grapes, and lutein from spinach leaves”,   Ray said.

Debprasad Chattopadhayay, Assistant Director, Indian Council for Medical Research stressed on the need to take 9 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday for healthy living.

“We need to consume 9 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday that would provide us essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants,” he said.

“These nutrients are required to maintain optimal health and ensure our holistic well being. However it is not feasible to consume the recommended servings of fresh fruits and vegetables for urban populace. To bridge the gap of nutrients, we need to consume supplements that would offer phytonutrients,” commented  Chattopadhyay.

Amway has been conducting this wellness campaign across the country with a view to sensitizing consumers and distributors.
