Review of Adalat O Ekti Meye Bengali Film

‘Adalat O Ekti Meye’ is a Bengali film by the eminent director of the Bengali and the Indian cinema, Tapan Sinha, about a young lady (played by Tanuja) who becomes a gang rape victim on a trip to seaside with her girl friends. This unfortunate incident changes her life. It is an extremely painful experience to be sexually abused, and even more to be mentally abused all life. Even after the scars leave her body, they do not leave her mind. It is the society and its representatives that lets a rape victim be a victim of the male chauvinistic society all her life. Her life is totally changed, and her father’s too. It is the victim who is ashamed of being a victim, not the men who makes innocent women prey of their unrestricted sexual wants. Tanuja has a done a great job. Even in her later acting career, she looked gorgeous in the film. Manoj Mitra is plays the role of an exceptional policeman, who does not get promotions because of this honesty and adherence to his principles – a cop that fills your heart with love, awe and respect.

A very touching story, where we all sympathize with a rape victim on screen. But does it change our attitude with the real life victims? Or in reality do we still act like characters in the film who critizes a raped woman, and not the sick rapist? ‘In Adalat O Ekti Meye’ director Tapan Sinha projects the mirror on our faces. It is time for us to see where we stand!

But as many other Tapan Sinha movies, ‘Adalat O Ekti Meye’ ends with a small ray of optimistic approach. At the end of the day, Sinha had faith in the the goodness of mankind!
