IBNS correspondent Supriyo Hazra caught up with actor Abir Chatterjee, as he spoke on playing the sleuth, his films, hobbies and shopping, in an informal chat in Kolkata. Excerpts:
How are you feeling after getting a pretty good response for your last released film ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’?
I am feeling very motivated. So many people are watching it. Young stars are also enjoying it, I am honoured.
How did you prepare yourself for playing a character like Byomkesh?
I had read all the stories when I was in class 8. I had a few informal ‘adda’ (chat) sessions with the director of the film, Anjan (Dutta) da. He called me up later on. I read the storyline. Moreover, I also watched the role of Byomkesh as played by Uttam Kumar. It also helped.
Who was your favorite detective character in your childhood days?
Well, Feluda was much more popular to me during my childhood days. But I re-discovered Byomkesh when I was in college. He is totally different. I rediscovered him once I matured.
Uttam Kumar had played the character of ‘Byomkesh’. When people compare you with him, how do you feel?
I find absolutely no comparison in it. I have interpreted it in my way. I had watched his film ‘Chiriyakhana’ long ago. I must say that I did it in completely my own way. Truly, in my way I paid tribute to both Uttam Kumar and Satyajit Ray.
Who was your inspiration when you started your acting career?
My family background played a big role. Acting is in our blood. Actually I had no such specific icon. But I am huge fan Aamir Khan.
What kind of movie do you like to watch?
I watch all sorts of films. From Bruce Lee, Jet Li to Govinda, I like to watch all sorts of movies.
Any actor with whom you would want to act in future?
No, I don’t have any such dream actor. But I like few filmmakers like Mani Ratnam and now Farhan Akhtar.
‘Durga Puja’ is round the corner, what are your Puja plans for this year?
I will just relax and take rest during the Pujas. I am planning to meet up with friends and of course Puja means food. I am planning to take lots of good foods during Puja.
Have you completed your Puja shopping?
I am not a good shopper. I rely completely on my wife.
What do you like to do when you are not busy shooting?
I used to write poems when I was in college. Although I hardly find time for it now. But, I like to sleep and I am really fond of good food. I also enjoy reading books.
