Movie Review: Aporichito (1969)
A big disappointment. Before I got the opportunity to watch this movie, I heard that people speaks highly of it, because it wasn’t a typical whimsical family-melodrama. We are actually very familiar with these characters, these are typical Samaresh Basu trademark. Samaresh Basu’s stories tend to have 3 stereotypes. Number #1, one too simple good-boy, who acts like he is new in this planet. Number #2, one slutty woman, high class callgirl/mistress. Number #3, one ordinary girl, who is dying to find a husband and get married, this is the only thing occupying her entire mind and only goal of her life.
Soumitra Chatterjee, Aparna Sen and Sandhya Ray are these 3 characters in this movies. Soumitra gave excellent performance, he totally fascinated me. Aparna is quite artificial and confused. I have seen her better performance before, for example, Rater Rajanigandha and Shesh Prishthay Dekhun. And Uttam Kumar as “scary goonda”? You gotta be kidding me. I was laughing at him. Since when making a sullen face means acting scary? I have noticed that, in Indian movies the dialogue-writers try to introduce the characters by dialogues, “He is a good guy”, “He is a scary guy”, “She is a sad woman” etc. But the truth is it’s the actor’s/actress’s goddamn job to make the audience believe who they are, they have to act like it. Bikash Ray’s character was pointless and totally unnecessary, but he gave us some funny moments anyway.
It looks like Uttam Kumar made an agreement with every production he worked in that his brother Tarun Kumar will also get a role, no matter how ridiculous that sounds, no matter how unnecessary that role is, even if they had to invent a character to satisfy the superstars wishes.
First half of the movie was so well-written, well-directed and well-acted that, I practically started to think this is going to be a remarkable experience, considering the movie is from 1969. Second half was just the contrary, 3 main characters in the rectangle underwent hard-to-believe personality changes, which felt far-fetched, especially “the immature idiot” became “the matured philosopher”!
